Throwing it back to 2013 with this one. Because Jerrod Niemann is, without question, one my favorite humans. He's a great artist who doesn't get half of the recognition he deserves. More than that, he's just an all around good dude with a good heart. I've been lucky in that most of the artists I've met have been very nice, but there's been a few standouts and Jerrod is definitely one of them. The first time I met him was at his joint fan club party with the equally loveable Lee Brice. He (both of them, actually) greeted each person with a hug and treated them more like a friend than a fan. I've gotten to meet him a couple of times since then and he's been the same every time. Earlier this year we lost one of country music most beloved artists. Little Jimmy Dickens was truly one of a kind. A great artist, he had a special talent for delivering both a lyric and a story. He was so funny that you could hear him say the same joke more than once and it would be just as funny as the first time. Even when you knew what was coming, he would still make you laugh. Every single time. What made Little Jimmy so special, however, was not his musicality or his sense of humor. What made him special was the way he cared about and loved other people. People don't say nice things about Little Jimmy Dickens; they say wonderful and beautiful things about him. People light up when they talk about him. All right, so we covered day 4 and what I dubbed as JakeCarrieStormGate 2013. Now we move backwards to Saturday, day 3, which gives us yet another controversy. This time involving the surprise guest. A guest which has me wondering just what on Earth the CMA was thinking. Actually, scratch that, I can guess what they were thinking: having this artist showing up on the TV special airing August 12th will make for good TV. Or rather, what they believe will be good TV. I may be way off base here, but lately it feels like there's people out there who seem determined to prove that country music is cool. And do so by trying to cater to fans of other genres. It's the only explanation that makes sense. The problem? Well, first it implies that country music isn't cool already and that's nonsense. Country may in fact be at the height of its coolness.
