Video Spotlight: The Evolution of the Disney Princess by Evynne Hollens

A while back I said that I would be devoting a week to all things Disney. Upon trying to decide what all I wanted to include, I determined that a week or even two weeks wouldn't be enough. See, I love Disney. Like I imagine was the case for many of you, I was raised on Disney. We had all the movies, a fair amount of Disney related toys and videos. We had a bunch of the old Disney Sing-along Songs videos (we're talking VHS here, people) and I think I about wore them out. "Part of Your World" was my favorite; I'd say "Part of Your World" was the "Let It Go" of its day.

Anyway, my parents took us to see some of the Disney on Ice shows and even a Disney cruise when we were growing up. The only cruise I've ever been on and it was a blast. And then, I've seen a few of the Disney musicals live and even did one of the songs from Beauty and the Beast musical ("Home") at the junior high talent show when I was in 8th grade.

The Disney love has never stopped. And so, I've decided that instead of a Disney week or two Disney weeks, I'm having a Disney August. That's right. Everything posted in the month of August will be somehow related to Disney. I figure it'll be mostly video spotlights, but there's at least one Disney themed album I'll be doing a review of sorts on. Maybe more than one. The crazy thing is that there's so many great Disney covers out there, that I just know I can't possibly get to them all. So who knows? This may be the first of multiple Disney themed months. We'll see.

This time around, I'll be focusing my attention primarily on Disney videos by some of my favorite artists. I could do an entire Disney month based on the Disney videos from Evynne and Peter Hollens alone. You'll be seeing a fair amount of them this month; in fact, they'll most likely dominate this month, but there'll be some VoicePlay mixed in too. Maybe a couple of others as well. To that end, if there's any Disney covers or albums or whatever that you love, leave me a comment below or hit me up on Twitter @countrymusicatk.

I may not have everything completely planned out for the month, but once I decided I would do what was then a Disney week, I knew exactly which video would kick it off. Because much like Evynne Hollens, I too have dreamed of being a Disney princess. Belle's always been my favorite. But Evynne? Well, as the title says, this is "The Evolution of the Disney Princess". Starting with Snow White and ending with Elsa, this video features 14  Disney princesses. Why be one Disney princess when you could be every Disney princess? Because I've seen people arguing over characters that got left out: not every lead female character is a princess. And Anastasia? Not a Disney character.

Now that that's out of the way, I invite you to watch "The Evolution of the Disney Princess".

I'm going to start out with a shout-out to Ella Dynae for all the fabulous costumes that Evynne's wearing in this. They're all so beautiful and they make the video all the more special. And another shout-out goes to the very talented Nathan Alef for his arrangement, which was great. What an undertaking!

It seems like I say this every time I write about Evynne, but she has become one of my favorite female singers and this video really showcases why. The way her voice changed throughout, to suit the song and the character? Wonderful. She has so much control over her voice, control that more singers should have. Her voice was made for the stage and for Disney. It's not just the way she sings the songs, it's the way she gets so into each character she's playing. Evynne's the kind of singer that other singers should learn from.

Speaking of which, Evynne actually has a series of voice lessons on her YouTube channel that are definitely worth checking out. She even did a specific lesson where she teaches how to sing this medley. I was originally just going to post a link, but I've decided to include that video as a bonus. Watching this actually makes me appreciate the medley even more, so maybe it'll do the same for you. Check it out.

This is quite a lesson. Honestly, it's a bit like watching some sort of master class. Evynne's so talented, both as a performer and as a teacher. I like the way she explains things and she always seems so encouraging. Plus she makes me laugh. In some ways, she reminds me a bit of the voice teacher I had in college. This is a compliment - one of the things I miss most about college, aside from my friends, is those voice lessons. I don't know how many singers will be reading this, but I would definitely recommend watching Evynne's other voice lessons. They're all good.

Yeah, so hopefully after watching "The Evolution of the Disney Princess" you can understand why I thought it'd be a great way to kick off a Disney August. The perfect way, even. This is going to be a tough one to follow, but I think I've chosen a good one. It's another medley and it involves Evynne's husband Peter. Definitely be on the lookout for that.

Song review: Water Tower Town by Scotty McCreery

I have an odd relationship, or whatever you want to call it, with American Idol. I was interested when I heard about it and watched the first three seasons, got annoyed with the third season and didn't watch the next only to start watching again during the fifth season. I loved the show during its sixth and seventh season, but started getting annoyed with it in the eighth. Sometime between then and now I've gone from being annoyed with it to now hating it as I see it for what it really is. I could go into more detail about that, but I won't. At least not here; maybe at another time. I'm sure many of you are wondering why I'm bothering to bring it up in the first place. Well, it's because I decided to do a review of "Water Tower Town" by the current American Idol for my next song review. Now, if you're a fan of American Idol, you might not like what I'm going to say next, but I ask that you stay with me because it'll end up being importa...

Album Review: Let It Go by Eileen Carey

Country. Pop. Rock. Eileen Carey's music blends all three styles together in a way that feels uniquely hers. I've just been trying to think if there's any other artists out there like her right now and I can't think of any. Eileen grew up in Ohio and relocated to California over 20 years ago. An independent artist, she has made quite a name for herself in California. That said, she spends a fair amount of time in Nashville and come to find out, she used Nashville musicians to track the songs of  Let It Go with all of the vocals recorded in Los Angeles. Oh, what a world we live in. I feel like you can hear influences of both places throughout the album. Let It Go is Eileen's fourth album and features three covers and eight originals. Five of which Eileen co-wrote and I was pleasantly surprised to see that another artist I like, Amy Dalley, co-wrote the other three. She (Amy) wrote "Anything That Reminds Me Of You" with her husband, Jack Sizemore, who i...

Song Review: Tip it On Back by Dierks Bentley

Before I get to my review, I want to give a shout-out to the Dierks Bentley Congress aka the @dbcongress. They are members of the Dierks Bentley fan club dedicated to supporting and promoting Dierks any and every way possible. They have a blog page,  found here , which includes links to their Facebook page and twitter account that you'll find to the right when you click on the link. If you're a Dierks Bentley fan and aren't following them, you really should be. They're pretty much my go for anything Dierks related - articles, interviews and so on. They also keep everyone updated on where his songs are on the charts and post all sorts of links to places to request or vote for his songs. Well worth the follow, I assure you. Last month they had the opportunity to interview the three gentlemen who wrote "Tip It On Back" - Ross Copperman, Tully Kennedy and Jon Nite. I strongly recommend that you go and read it as it's a very enjoyable read. You can find it  h...
