So the ACMs have come and gone and I said I'd do a post about what I thought of the show and here's the first part of that. The first of two parts since I decided to do two posts about it, one focusing on how I did with my predictions and another about what I thought of all the performances. I've gotten so behind in my posting lately and am hoping to get a lot of new stuff out there over the next week and beyond. There's forever song reviews to be done and I have some album reviews to do as well, as long as that trivia contest I first brought up several posts ago. That's all coming and hopefully in a timely fashion. But for now: The 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards winners. http://www.acmcountry.com/winners.html
So how'd I do? Well, let's take a look.
Starting off with the biggest award of the night, Entertainer of the Year, which was fan voted though I think there was an industry voted component of it. I called it for Jason Aldean, but it ended up going to Taylor Swift. I said she was the obvious choice and sometimes obvious gets it. This really came as no surprise whatsoever; the surprise would've been if anyone else had won. I'd love to see how many votes each nominee got to see just how close it was. Out of all of the nominees, Taylor's show is the most elaborate and she's the only one whose tour went all over the world. She also has a rabid fan base who is used to voting for her for various things. That's one thing Taylor figured out early - how to use the power of the Internet. You're starting to see more of them figuring it out, but unfortunately for them, Taylor had the extreme advantage.
Male Vocalist. I predicted that Blake Shelton would win and win he did. I think I was the most curious about this category since it was hard to tell how they would vote. But ultimately they went with what was again probably the obvious choice. And one I can't really argue with as I feel he is one of the strongest vocalists in the genre today.
Moving along to Female Vocalist, this was another category I got right. I would've been stunned in Miranda had lost this; not because she has the best voice, but because she's so insanely popular right now. Not really much to say about this one, really, aside from that fact that it still kind of bums me out that Reba didn't get a nomination.
Next up in what many are considering to be the biggest upset of the awards: Vocal Duo of the Year. Though the more I think about it, the more obvious it is that this particular duo would win. Thompson Square took this one home and if there was ever a category I'm happy I got right, it's this one. I love Sugarland as I think I've said before, but I love Thompson Square too and think they are so deserving. Not to mention how good this is for the category. Awards need shaking up sometimes and I'm going to be doing a blog talking about why I think so. So stay tuned for that. It does annoy me that this happened off camera; I feel kind of cheated as a fan that it wasn't.
For vocal group, I went bold and called it for The Band Perry, but said it was Lady Antebellum's to lose. Lady A did in fact take this one and again, didn't surprise me at all.
I know I just fast forwarded through group, but that's to leave more room to talk about this next category which is Album of the Year. I called it for Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party and it went to Miranda Lambert for Four the Record. There were really only two awards I totally disagreed with and this was one. The awards should go to whoever or whatever made the biggest impact in the year that the award represents and so I don't think Miranda's album deserved to be up for it at all, let alone get it. This is not a critique of the album itself; I've only listened to it once and don't feel like I could give a fair critique of it because of that. My problem is strictly due to the timing of it. It didn't get released until the last quarter of the last year. It is not the album of last year. Should've been nominated for next year if it was going to get nominated.
Single Record of the Year. I called it for "Tomorrow" by Chris Young and was surprised to see that I said it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if "Don't You Wanna Stay" by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson won. And yet, "Don't You Wanna Stay" did in fact win and it totally took me by surprise. Hard to argue since it did so well.
Song of the Year. I thought that "Home" by Dierks Bentley would win; the award ended up going to Eli Young Band's "Crazy Girl" which was a hit I don't believe the country world saw coming. It was Billboard's most played country song of 2011 and that alone makes it worthy of a win.
Songwriter of the Year. This one happened off camera and I'm not happy about it even knowing it would be. In any event I predicted that it would go to Dallas Davidson and I was right.
I tentatively called New Artist for Scotty McCreery and that's who won. It's been interesting to see how shocked a lot of fans are about this one. Granted, I bet this was a very close race and would love to see how many votes each got. But really, if an Idol contestant is up for a fan voted award they'll pretty much always win. Idol fans understand the power of the vote more than any other since they end up doing it every week. So no shock here. I want to add at I really liked his acceptance speech.
Video of the Year. It's probably unhealthy how much the outcome of this award irritates me. I called it for "Tattoos on this Town" by Jason Aldean and said I thought it was between that and Eric Church's "Homeboy". Did either win? No. What did? "Red Solo Cup". I will never understand the insane pull that "Red Solo Cup" has. Did not deserve the nomination, IMO, and especially didn't deserve the win. Not to knock Toby Keith or the director, but this was not video of the year potential at all. I feel strongly about this which I'm sure isn't obvious at all. ;)
Moving on to the final category: Vocal Event. I predicted that "Don't You Wanna Stay" by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson would win and it did. This one was a no contest.
And so, there you go. I think I did pretty good overall. That's it for now and keep an eye out for more reviews and for what I thought of the show itself, focusing on the performances. Thanks for reading!
