I always like when artists expand their horizons a bit and put out songs about a subject they've never sung about before. Or maybe they have done songs about said subject before, but have never released any as a single before. Or maybe they've put out songs about the same subject, but from a different perspective. Whatever the case may be I like when artists branch out some. Better to be diverse than to keep releasing songs that are essentially the same in sound and especially subject and mood.
Which is why I was happy to find out that Justin Moore would be releasing "Till My Last Day" as a single. He's had a handful of singles, some of which have done very well - "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" anyone - but he hadn't put out a love song. Until now. I like when artists do this because it gives them an opportunity to showcase another side of themselves, add another dimension to who they are as both a person and an artist. So automatically I have to give Justin props for branching out this way.
Going deeper.
I think I've gotten away from mentioning this in my last couple of song reviews so to get it out of the way right away, this song was written by Brian Dean Maher, Justin Moore and Jeremy Stover. Now I've never written a love song, but I see writing them as being a tricky kind of business. Why? Because it's important that it be the right kind of love song; a love song that will suit the person singing it. For an artist like Justin Moore, you want to make sure that it's not too sappy. Nothing against sappy; it can work for certain kinds of people, but only for certain kinds of people. If it's too flowery or overly poetic, it just wouldn't work for a guy like Justin Moore. There's a fine balance that needs to take place. A balance that I'd say they achieved here.
This is a fairly straight-forward kind of love song, it's something I could imagine a good ole country boy saying to the woman he loves. I like the way it sets up with him basically being like, look I know I'm not perfect and I don't have the best reputation, but no one can love you like I can and I'll be loving you until I die. Until his last day to be exact. I appreciate the honesty of it and I like that it's sweet, but not overly so. It ranks pretty well on my aww-o-meter. Anyone remember that? Maybe my favorite thing about it? It's obviously very personal to Justin, but done in a way that's pretty universal. A lot of people are going to relate to this one I'm thinking.
Musically, I really like the use of the slide guitar in this. It adds something extra and whoever was playing it did a great job. I like slide guitar a lot, but only when it's used right. If it's overused I can start to get annoyed with it. Here, they did it in a way that fit and didn't feel excessive. I wish I knew who the player was so I could give them a proper shout out. Aside from that, this song has a breeziness to it that's nice. Good production as well.
Vocally, Justin gave a very solid delivery that I enjoy. It's pleasant to listen to. What's interesting about this is how much he reminds me of Blake Shelton in this. He even sounds like him at times which isn't something I've ever thought before. It's a nice delivery for a good song.
