Song review: Water Tower Town by Scotty McCreery

I have an odd relationship, or whatever you want to call it, with American Idol. I was interested when I heard about it and watched the first three seasons, got annoyed with the third season and didn't watch the next only to start watching again during the fifth season. I loved the show during its sixth and seventh season, but started getting annoyed with it in the eighth. Sometime between then and now I've gone from being annoyed with it to now hating it as I see it for what it really is. I could go into more detail about that, but I won't. At least not here; maybe at another time. I'm sure many of you are wondering why I'm bothering to bring it up in the first place.

Well, it's because I decided to do a review of "Water Tower Town" by the current American Idol for my next song review. Now, if you're a fan of American Idol, you might not like what I'm going to say next, but I ask that you stay with me because it'll end up being important. The past year I have felt like Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina were being crammed down my throat and I began to, perhaps unfairly, resent them for it. Part of it comes from being a fan of artists who have fought so long and hard to get anyone to care, many of which never get the attention they deserve. Another part of it being that I hate when people get pushed on me; I hate being told I need to like someone or something. The irony of me saying that while I'm writing a review is not lost on me, I assure you. I prefer to be shown instead of told. Having someone tell me someone is amazing will only irritate me; if they're so good they'll prove themselves. Now. Again I'll ask for any Idol and/or Scotty fans to stick with me here.

I've liked who Scotty comes across as a person, he's done things that have impressed me - first example being winning the coin toss on Idol and deferring instead to Lauren. That showed a lot of class. I've also respected him for being so open about his beliefs. I can admire him for that. He's been very respectful towards the country music community which I appreciate; it's nice. I think he has a very nice voice as well. But honestly, the jury has been out of whether or not he has what it takes to sustain a long-term career in country music. His first two singles, while not bad, didn't do much to convince me on that front. That said, I hate when critics/reviewers let their personal opinion cloud their reviews and so when I decided to review this, I decided to do so objectively. Focusing on the song itself.

And you know what? In doing so I found that somewhere along the way I stopped thinking about him as Scotty McCreery, that guy who won American Idol, to Scotty McCreery, country artist. Let's go deeper.

I've read other reviews and while I can respect that people have different opinions, I feel like some critics have been a little too harsh on this song. Yes, this type of song has been done many times over and guess what fellow reviewers, that's not going to be stopping anytime soon. There's a reason why this kind of idea is used so much: it's an idea that artists and fans can relate to. People can listen to songs like this and think that hey, that's like my town. Yes, the lyrics are a little generic and maybe there's some cliches in there, but honestly I've heard it done worse. I said it somewhere else, but my feeling on cliches is that I don't mind if it works and I feel these do work. There's a sincerity in these lyrics that isn't always found in other songs of this type. On one hand, the words are familiar, but on the other, it's familiar in a way that somehow feels kind of new.

And if I'm being honest, and I have been, by the third or so listen I caught myself singing along. This song is very, very singable and I'd imagine it'll be a good song to see live because of that. The words flow very nicely which I like. The words seem to have been crafted with him in mind and that helps. It feels very genuine to who Scotty is both as a person and an artist and that is so important. I would rather have a song with a well used idea that's true to the person singing it than a more unique song that doesn't feel real. Does that make any sense?

I mentioned that this song is very singable and the melody has a lot to do with that. Musically, there's an energy present that I didn't feel in his previous two singles. I'm so happy that they went with a more uptempo song for his next single. That was a great idea. Very good playing in this, but when you're talking about Nashville studio musicians, I come to expect that. Everything feels like it fits musically which is a good thing. This might be a little overproduced maybe, but not so much that it annoys me.

Vocally, much like the music, there's an energy to Scotty's voice that wasn't found in his other singles. People always compare him to Josh Turner and he does have some Josh moments in here, but he reminded me a little bit of Dierks Bentley at times too. It's a very solid vocal.

To reiterate what I said before the cut, in listening to this I've finally been able to see him as Scotty McCreery country artist instead of that guy who won Idol. As of now, the only songs I've gotten of his were all of his singles, but I've never been inspired to get the rest of the album. Something that this song might change. I really do enjoy this. Good single for this time of year as well. I predict that this will have have more radio play than his last two and should do better overall. And I also feel like this one is going to stand the test of time pretty well also. This is the type of song that's never really going to seem old because the sentiment will never change. Which, as I might point out to other reviewers is part of the reason why people write these kind of songs: people will always be able to relate to them.

In closing, I feel like "Water Tower Town" has been pretty harshly reviewed, though everyone is of course entitled to their opinion and has the right to express it. Of course there's good and bad ways to express those opinions. I invite the critics to lighten up a little and Scotty's fans to relax a little bit. You don't gotta go crazy convincing people he's a good artist; he has the ability to do that himself. I know because he's finally convinced me. Now see? This is why I wanted to be honest about my thoughts on Idol in general and what my opinion of him as an artist was - it's important because it changed. Solid song.

  2. I was listening to Scotty's CD "Clear as Day" reading your review.
Don't wait any longer to buy it. You are in for a treat. There is not a bad song on it. It definitely made platinum for a reason.
Thanks for your very thoughtful review.

  3. Thank you for this very honest review. I especially appreciated your comment to the fans...Scotty doesn't need defending, he certainly can
win them over on his own.

  4. Kim, I'm so glad you gave Scotty a chance to win you over all by himself. I agree he has the personality and talent to win people over one by one. In my opinion the first two singles are the weakest songs on the album...yet they did pretty well... which to me says alot about his potential! Thanks again for a honest balanced review of Water Tower Town!

  7. Enjoyed your review and appreciate the fact that you really decided to look at it objectively. Scotty fans probably at times should "chill" but it is their dedication and passion they have for him to succeed and to be given a fair chance by radio that brings out the determination in them I think. It shouldn't matter where a person is discovered as to whether their music is treated the same as established artist. I am sure he will eventually win over those radio critics but fans aren't always patient. The song is something that Scotty and thousands of others can relate to which should help. I'll gift you that CD it is that good.

    1. Oh I totally get that and it's good for artists to be passionate about promoting their artists, just so long as they aren't going way overboard. Radio's tough - a lot of times they have their set list of songs to play and won't deviate which makes it hard for newer people to break through. One of the problems with radio, but I think Scotty'll be fine. He's better off than a lot of artists which'll help. Thank you for reading!

  8. Thanks for the review! As one of many Scotty's fans I believe he will be winning over his critics one at a time just by being himself!

    1. It'll happen! At least I expect him to win over a bunch of them, there's always going to be some you can't please. But really, as long as people are buying the music it really doesn't matter what critics think. And you're welcome!

  10. Great review Kim! Thanks for keeping an open mind about Scotty's music even after feeling he was forced on you by American Idol. I didn't Idol one minute last year, but discovered Scotty McCreery's voice. And heard, and then saw, a great deal of potential. There are 2-3 songs on the album I like more than this one, but I do love Water Tower Town.

I'm looking forward to his 2nd album so all his fans will really get a glance into how he is developing as a country music artist. I got a feeling it's going to be something special!

  11. I appreciate reading such an honest review of Scotty's song and re: him, as well. You're right, as a fan, we aren't always patient but many of us have seen Scotty isn't going to need a lot of help. He knows what he's doing & how to do it. His fanbase will always be behind him but Scotty's doing the footwork and his plan is pretty much laid out, I think. Thanks, again.

  12. I bought Clear as Day the day it was released. Of course, I'd been watching Idol and Scotty since his first audition and was already a fan, but, I was blown away by the quality of his voice and the songs in the album. I have no doubt Scotty is here to stay. His winning Idol, and his current career, are not "flukes", as I've heard others say. He's here to stay and will only get better with time and experience. I hope people can remain open to judging him on his talent and merit, as you have done, instead of winning a singing competition.

  13. He has a lot of fans from Asia and I am one of them. I bought copies of CAD within the 1st week of release and I love all the songs. On by children, siblings and friends/ birthday, I have been able to tell them I love them This Big, which normally I couldn't. I can also relate to WTT as we also have water towers in our towns here. I never look at them the way Scotty does and now I am paying more attention to them now.

Like all his fans, I am also looking forward to his next album which I know will be great. A fan forever.

Album review: Christmas with Scotty McCreery by Scotty McCreery

First things first, I'm wishing everyone who celebrates a happy Hanukkah! Perhaps that's a strange way to kick off a review of a Christmas album, but it wouldn't have felt right not to include it. And really, when you really think and learn about what each holiday is about you see that in a way the first Hanukkah is one of the things that made Christmas possible. So once again, happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. Those of you who have read my album reviews know this, but the way I do album reviews is to give my overall opinion and then look at each song individually after the cut. Which means that album review posts can get pretty long. Just a warning. This album came out back in October, but I never listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Hence why there hasn't been a review until now. So what do I think? I think that releasing Christmas albums can be a little risky. The majority of these songs are so well known and loved already. They've been recorded

Video Spotlight: Sam Tsui

I first found out about Sam Tsui from a collaboration that he did with one of my favorite male singers, Peter Hollens. As it turned out, some of my friends are also fans of Sam's and there was a point where I kept seeing people post some of his videos. So finally I decided to go check out his YouTube channel. Turns out, he has all kinds of great covers on there and even some originals. I liked him and knew it was only a mattered of time before I wrote about him.  The only trouble was picking which video to write about first. There were a bunch of strong contenders and it's safe to assume that all of those will get a spotlight at some point down the road. But it was hard to pick. The obvious solution was just to do a video spotlight on Sam himself. We'll be talking about five of his videos. Starting with the first one I saw.
