Video Spotlight: Outskirts of Heaven (Lyric Video) by Craig Campbell

Today's video is a lyric video, the first one I've ever written about. I thought about waiting to see if an official music video would he coming out, but decided not to. It was a conversation I had with someone on Twitter changed my mind. They were talking about how much they liked the song and we both agreed that Craig Campbell is horribly underrated. So I decided to go ahead and write about the lyric video. I know a lot of you are familiar with lyric videos, but in case anyone is not, they're exactly what they sound like. A video where the lyrics of the song are written out. This was something that I've seen fans do when they like a song, but now more and more artists are putting them out. These are usually released before a "regular" music video gets put out. It's a great way to introduce a song to an audience these days.

If you've been frustrated with the lack of old school country on the radio, "Outskirts of Heaven" will be most welcome. Craig wrote it with Dave Turnbull and I'd say they about knocked it out of the park. It's a beautiful lyric and a great vocal by Craig. I love how visual it is; it paints such a vivid picture. Not enough songs do that these days, in my opinion. I really like the melody too. The steel guitar puts it over the top for me and makes me wonder why we don't hear it on more songs. That's a complaint for another time. For now, I invite you to sit back and relax while you enjoy the lyric video for "Outskirts of Heaven".

One thing that I liked about this lyric video was that it included shots of Craig singing - off the top of my head, I can't think of another lyric video where you see the artist. It's a nice touch. I like the effect used on the video and the colors. All in all, a very pleasant video to watch. I don't know about the rest of you, but living on the outskirts of heaven sounds pretty wonderful to me.

Meanwhile, if you asked me to come up with a list of the artists that I'd most like to meet, Craig would absolutely be on it. I hear the nicest things about him which isn't surprising. He seems like such a genuine person and we need more of them. I have a hard time understanding how he's not more popular. If you're not already following him on social media, do. The links will be below as always. One thing that he's been doing that I love is his take on #wcw. For those not up on all the social media tags, wcw typically stands for Woman Crush Wednesday. Which is when people post things about, you guessed it, women they have some sort of crush on. Craig has changed this to Woman Cover Wednesday where he posts a cover of songs originally done by women. He's been doing these for three months now and it's such a great idea. I think it's always so interesting to hear a song from a different perspective.

Craig's done a mixture of country and pop songs, though when he sings it? If it wasn't country originally, it's sure going to sound country. At the moment there's two that are tied for favorite for me. Namely, "Shake It Off" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun". I've liked them all so far though. In fact, if he ever decided to put out an album of them, I would absolutely get it. I hope he keeps it up. I'd like to see him do something by Kitty Wells at some point. "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" being the obvious first choice. Either that or "Those Memories of You" by Trio. I've actually wanted to hear a man sing that song for a long time. I think he'd do a great job with it. That said, part of the fun of this series is seeing what he'll do next. You can find all of the videos he's done so far on his YouTube channel. He uploaded his newest cover earlier today. The song is "My Heart Will Go On", originally by Celine Dion, and you can watch it here. So definitely check that out.

And if you like "Outskirts of Heaven" and haven't bought it, well, what exactly are you waiting for?

Song review: Water Tower Town by Scotty McCreery

I have an odd relationship, or whatever you want to call it, with American Idol. I was interested when I heard about it and watched the first three seasons, got annoyed with the third season and didn't watch the next only to start watching again during the fifth season. I loved the show during its sixth and seventh season, but started getting annoyed with it in the eighth. Sometime between then and now I've gone from being annoyed with it to now hating it as I see it for what it really is. I could go into more detail about that, but I won't. At least not here; maybe at another time. I'm sure many of you are wondering why I'm bothering to bring it up in the first place. Well, it's because I decided to do a review of "Water Tower Town" by the current American Idol for my next song review. Now, if you're a fan of American Idol, you might not like what I'm going to say next, but I ask that you stay with me because it'll end up being importa...

Song Review: Tip it On Back by Dierks Bentley

Before I get to my review, I want to give a shout-out to the Dierks Bentley Congress aka the @dbcongress. They are members of the Dierks Bentley fan club dedicated to supporting and promoting Dierks any and every way possible. They have a blog page,  found here , which includes links to their Facebook page and twitter account that you'll find to the right when you click on the link. If you're a Dierks Bentley fan and aren't following them, you really should be. They're pretty much my go for anything Dierks related - articles, interviews and so on. They also keep everyone updated on where his songs are on the charts and post all sorts of links to places to request or vote for his songs. Well worth the follow, I assure you. Last month they had the opportunity to interview the three gentlemen who wrote "Tip It On Back" - Ross Copperman, Tully Kennedy and Jon Nite. I strongly recommend that you go and read it as it's a very enjoyable read. You can find it  h...

Album review: Christmas with Scotty McCreery by Scotty McCreery

First things first, I'm wishing everyone who celebrates a happy Hanukkah! Perhaps that's a strange way to kick off a review of a Christmas album, but it wouldn't have felt right not to include it. And really, when you really think and learn about what each holiday is about you see that in a way the first Hanukkah is one of the things that made Christmas possible. So once again, happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. Those of you who have read my album reviews know this, but the way I do album reviews is to give my overall opinion and then look at each song individually after the cut. Which means that album review posts can get pretty long. Just a warning. This album came out back in October, but I never listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Hence why there hasn't been a review until now. So what do I think? I think that releasing Christmas albums can be a little risky. The majority of these songs are so well known and loved already. They've been recorded ...
