Video Spotlight: Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer by Home Free

Ah, you gotta love the men of Home Free. One day they might bring you to tears with a gorgeous, heartwarming arrangement full of those luscious harmonies of theirs. The next they come out with something like this. I know many of the people reading this will have already seen this video, but for those of you who haven't? Given what song it is, it will not surprise you to see that this is a funny video. One that managed to keep my giggling pretty much the entire time.

Before we get to it, though, I want to take the opportunity to talk about their Christmas tour, a Country Christmas. I got to see it when they came to the TPAC here in Nashville and it was great. As expected. This was the fourth time I've seen them, but two of those times were sets at CMAFest that only lasted for roughly 40 minutes or so. I also got to see their Grand Ole Opry debut where they, like everyone during their Opry debut, just did two songs. Making this show the first full length Home Free concert. They sang for about two hours, a mix of Christmas songs and some of their country covers. Their live show is such an entertaining one and once again I managed to be surprised by how much better they sounded like. I didn't think it was possibly, but vocal percussionist Adam Rupp has completely stepped up his game. His solo was just insane. He's so incredibly talented and I'm not convinced that he's completely human. Watching him is like watching a master class in vocal percussion. The shows are worth it for his solo alone. When you add in the beautiful harmonies of the other four, you really do have something special.

Now, how about the video? Well, Home Free's video for "Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer" features the guys attempting to sing for some folks. After getting the doors slammed in their faces, they decide that a home invasion is the way to go. Hilarity ensues. See for yourself.

That'd be their producer Darren Rust who is the unfortunate "victim" of the Home Free invasion. Hey, the song is pretty silly, so why not make a silly video to go along with it? Makes sense to me. This video, along with the VoicePlay video I featured last post, highlights one of my favorite things about a cappella music. They take their talent seriously. Not themselves. They have no problems acting like total goofballs and I love them for it. Though in all honesty, I'm not sure how much acting was involved and I say that with love. They are goofballs; that's part of what makes them so very entertaining. It works because they're so talented. This is kind of a theme with the a cappella groups that have become my favorites.

There's so much about this video that gets me giggling. Austin and Darren's battle over the TV. Tim's battle with the lights. Rob and the refrigerator. Chance and the laundry room - the part where his hat has gotten stuck in the washing machine is one of my favorite parts. That and when he's rocking the bleach or whatever that was he was holding. It's just so absurd. Of course, we musn't overlook Adam in the bathroom with the newspaper. It took a repeated viewing for me to notice that he has a towel wrapped around himself when he leaves the bathroom. Darren's reaction when handed the toothbrush is perfect. Austin coming up close to Rob for the "sing it, Rob" and Chance's reaction. Then there's Tim attempting to decorate the house, followed by a rather unamused Darren throwing everything away. Only for Tim to then put the wreath around his neck with that ridiculous grin on his face. That shot absolutely tickles me.

The whole video in a word? Golden. It's a nice break from the stressful parts of the holiday season and a video that stays just as amusing with each watch. As I've said: you gotta love these guys.

So how about staying in touch with them? Here's where you can.

Song review: Water Tower Town by Scotty McCreery

I have an odd relationship, or whatever you want to call it, with American Idol. I was interested when I heard about it and watched the first three seasons, got annoyed with the third season and didn't watch the next only to start watching again during the fifth season. I loved the show during its sixth and seventh season, but started getting annoyed with it in the eighth. Sometime between then and now I've gone from being annoyed with it to now hating it as I see it for what it really is. I could go into more detail about that, but I won't. At least not here; maybe at another time. I'm sure many of you are wondering why I'm bothering to bring it up in the first place. Well, it's because I decided to do a review of "Water Tower Town" by the current American Idol for my next song review. Now, if you're a fan of American Idol, you might not like what I'm going to say next, but I ask that you stay with me because it'll end up being importa...

Song Review: Tip it On Back by Dierks Bentley

Before I get to my review, I want to give a shout-out to the Dierks Bentley Congress aka the @dbcongress. They are members of the Dierks Bentley fan club dedicated to supporting and promoting Dierks any and every way possible. They have a blog page,  found here , which includes links to their Facebook page and twitter account that you'll find to the right when you click on the link. If you're a Dierks Bentley fan and aren't following them, you really should be. They're pretty much my go for anything Dierks related - articles, interviews and so on. They also keep everyone updated on where his songs are on the charts and post all sorts of links to places to request or vote for his songs. Well worth the follow, I assure you. Last month they had the opportunity to interview the three gentlemen who wrote "Tip It On Back" - Ross Copperman, Tully Kennedy and Jon Nite. I strongly recommend that you go and read it as it's a very enjoyable read. You can find it  h...

Album review: Christmas with Scotty McCreery by Scotty McCreery

First things first, I'm wishing everyone who celebrates a happy Hanukkah! Perhaps that's a strange way to kick off a review of a Christmas album, but it wouldn't have felt right not to include it. And really, when you really think and learn about what each holiday is about you see that in a way the first Hanukkah is one of the things that made Christmas possible. So once again, happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. Those of you who have read my album reviews know this, but the way I do album reviews is to give my overall opinion and then look at each song individually after the cut. Which means that album review posts can get pretty long. Just a warning. This album came out back in October, but I never listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Hence why there hasn't been a review until now. So what do I think? I think that releasing Christmas albums can be a little risky. The majority of these songs are so well known and loved already. They've been recorded ...
