2012 ACMs Thoughts & Predictions Part 4

Nine categories down and three more to go! This time I'm going to take a look at New Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year to wrap up my ACM thoughts and predictions. But first I want to address my comments about Entertainer where I didn't really take into account the fact that it's fan-voted, even after posting the link where everyone will be able to vote come Noon on March 19th, right before talking about it. I was looking at it more like the non fan-voted categories. But I'm sticking with my prediction of Jason Aldean winning for all of the reasons I mentioned and the fact that I believe that his fans are as hungry for him to win as he is. I probably didn't need to clarify that point, but wanted to. So that's that.

Now it's time for me to focus on the final three categories. Here we go.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Brantley Gilbert
Hunter Hayes
Scotty McCreery

Very interesting line up here. First up is Brantley Gilbert who has proven himself to be a talented songwriter with "My Kinda Party" and "Dirt Road Anthem". Then there's Hunter Hayes who wrote/co-wrote every song on his debut album which he also co-produced and there was something else about this album worth mentioning. Oh yes, he also played every single instrument on the whole CD. Then there's Scotty McCreery who won a singing competition. Since winning American Idol last May, Scotty has has two singles, "I Love You This Big" and "The Trouble With Girls" go gold and his debut album, Clear As Day go platinum.

This one is fan-voted so ultimately it's a question of who has the strongest fan base. No doubt all three will be launching huge Internet campaigns to try and lure people to vote for them. If this was based on who actually deserves it the most, I'd say that it should go to Hunter Hayes. That's who has my vote. He did something with his album that no one does, new or otherwise and I'd love to see him recognized for it.

But Brantley Gilbert and Scotty McCreery will be hard to beat. I can't count Hunter out because his fans seem pretty determined and that goes a long way. He does have a chance, but I'd consider him to be the underdog in this category. This is one where I'd love to see how many votes they all end up getting because I'd imagine that this one is going to be incredibly close. Possibly as in a handle of votes separating the three of them.

I'm going to tentatively call it for Scotty McCreery, but nothing would surprise me here.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
"Homeboy" – Eric Church
"Just A Kiss" – Lady Antebellum
"Mean" – Taylor Swift
"Red Solo Cup" – Toby Keith
"Tattoos On This Town" – Jason Aldean

Well, I have to say that I love that three of the videos I had in the top ten videos of 2011 countdown are up for video of the year here. Two of which happen to be my top two. I really don't understand the insane draw "Red Solo Cup" has; nothing against Toby Keith, but I don't think this belongs here. There were so many better videos. I wouldn't have put "Just A Kiss" in here either, but I get why it was.

It may be my bias showing, but I feel like it's a toss up between "Homeboy" and "Tattoos On This Town". I'm going to go with what I picked for my top video and be honest and admit that it's partly out of a weird kind of loyalty. That and I really believe that it was the best video last year. And so, I can't call it for anyone else.

VOCAL EVENT OF THE YEAR
"Country Boy" – Aaron Lewis featuring George Jones & Charlie Daniels
"Don’t You Wanna Stay" – Jason Aldean featuring Kelly Clarkson
"Old Alabama" – Brad Paisley featuring Alabama
"Remind Me" – Brad Paisley Duet featuring Carrie Underwood
"You And Tequila" – Kenny Chesney featuring Grace Potter

This one is without question the easiest one for me to call. All of these songs did pretty well, but there was one in particular that kind of left the other four in the dust in terms of success and I'd be stunned if it didn't win. I'll say that there is a very slim chance for a big upset and if that happens, I'd guess that the award would go to Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood.

But I gotta go and call it for Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson. I feel like this is a no contest.

Of course I thought the same a couple of years ago about "Life in a Northern Town", which was released by Jake Owen, Little Big Town and Sugarland. To this day I cannot believe it didn't get anything. I don't get how that happened.

In any event, this officially wraps up my thoughts and predictions about the ACMs. My pre-show thoughts, rather. I'll be writing about what I thought of the show itself afterwards. Obviously that won't be for another month and there's a lot for me to write about between now and then. I'd love to know what your thoughts are of all the nominees and who you think will win and who you think should.

I have lots of song reviews coming, along with video reviews and all sorts of other things. I'm working on the trivia contest I mentioned several posts ago. It's gotten much more involved since then as I've decided that there'll be more questions and levels of prizes in the form of pictures and CDs. I'll have the questions up ASAP so be on the lookout for that. I'm going to look through all my pictures and doing a picture heavy post too to show some examples of the kinds of pictures you could win. That will include a list of all the artists I feel I have really good pictures of. I'll be consulting any willing friends and family members to help me pick the best examples. I have a lot. Like a LOT a lot. So once again, be on the lookout!

And as always, thank you for reading!

Song review: Water Tower Town by Scotty McCreery

I have an odd relationship, or whatever you want to call it, with American Idol. I was interested when I heard about it and watched the first three seasons, got annoyed with the third season and didn't watch the next only to start watching again during the fifth season. I loved the show during its sixth and seventh season, but started getting annoyed with it in the eighth. Sometime between then and now I've gone from being annoyed with it to now hating it as I see it for what it really is. I could go into more detail about that, but I won't. At least not here; maybe at another time. I'm sure many of you are wondering why I'm bothering to bring it up in the first place. Well, it's because I decided to do a review of "Water Tower Town" by the current American Idol for my next song review. Now, if you're a fan of American Idol, you might not like what I'm going to say next, but I ask that you stay with me because it'll end up being importa...

Song Review: Tip it On Back by Dierks Bentley

Before I get to my review, I want to give a shout-out to the Dierks Bentley Congress aka the @dbcongress. They are members of the Dierks Bentley fan club dedicated to supporting and promoting Dierks any and every way possible. They have a blog page,  found here , which includes links to their Facebook page and twitter account that you'll find to the right when you click on the link. If you're a Dierks Bentley fan and aren't following them, you really should be. They're pretty much my go for anything Dierks related - articles, interviews and so on. They also keep everyone updated on where his songs are on the charts and post all sorts of links to places to request or vote for his songs. Well worth the follow, I assure you. Last month they had the opportunity to interview the three gentlemen who wrote "Tip It On Back" - Ross Copperman, Tully Kennedy and Jon Nite. I strongly recommend that you go and read it as it's a very enjoyable read. You can find it  h...

Album review: Christmas with Scotty McCreery by Scotty McCreery

First things first, I'm wishing everyone who celebrates a happy Hanukkah! Perhaps that's a strange way to kick off a review of a Christmas album, but it wouldn't have felt right not to include it. And really, when you really think and learn about what each holiday is about you see that in a way the first Hanukkah is one of the things that made Christmas possible. So once again, happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. Those of you who have read my album reviews know this, but the way I do album reviews is to give my overall opinion and then look at each song individually after the cut. Which means that album review posts can get pretty long. Just a warning. This album came out back in October, but I never listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Hence why there hasn't been a review until now. So what do I think? I think that releasing Christmas albums can be a little risky. The majority of these songs are so well known and loved already. They've been recorded ...
