Time to go back to the roots, so to speak, for a classical cover. This video features a Phantom medley performed by Taylor Davis on violin and Lara de Wit on piano. Hard to go wrong when you pair a violin and a piano. These instruments complement each other so incredibly well. Especially when used to perform music like this. This medley showcases a gentler, more emotional side of Phantom of the Opera. With the exception of "Masquerade", which is used to open and close the piece, all of the songs are love songs. "The Phantom and the Opera" and "The Point of No Return" are sung by Christine and the Phantom; "All I Ask of You", which starts at 1:48, is the sweet duet between Christine and Raoul. These songs are about romance and passion and when combined like this are just exquisite. Enjoy.
One of the reasons why I picked the five videos I did for this week is partly because they are my favorite of all the Phantom covers I've seen. But also because they each offer a different take of the wonderful music from the show. This is perhaps the most understated of all the covers this week. The songs are played straight with no frills. I have no problem with frills; I like them a lot of the time. That said, sometimes it's nice to hear the music simply for what it is. Taylor Davis and Lara de Wit played this piece so beautifully and with so much feeling. And evidently by ear, as stated in the description box when you watch it on YouTube. No sheet music. They arranged the medley themselves as well. Pretty impressive, in my opinion.
As far as the video itself, I liked the way it was shot. The lighting was beautiful and I like that the instruments themselves got as much focus as they did. As someone who admittedly struggles with playing instruments, I think it's so interesting watching good musicians play. The use of Taylor and Lara in the boxes was a nice touch. I also love that "Masquerade" got some love for once. That's one song that doesn't seem to make it in too many covers and was the perfect way to start and finish the medley. Very effective.
